- InDesign (60% Off – Best Overall) Adobe InDesign is easily the best alternative to Microsoft.
- LibreOffice (which is difference than ProjectLibre), free to download and use, can open Microsoft Publisher files. Another option to consider is using a Windows virtual machine on your iMac.
Microsoft publisher has been around for a long time but it has never been able to run on Apple computers. If you’re like me you probably have friends who have Microsoft publisher files they occasionally email you. Sadly there is no way to open a Microsoft publisher file on a Mac, until now…
What is the equivalent of Microsoft Publisher on Mac? There are several desktop publishing alternatives to Microsoft Publisher. While Apple computers come with some basic publishing programs such as Pages, Lucidpress offers a more robust publishing platform that will work on both PC and OS.
Here are two websites that can convert Microsoft publisher files to PDF.
You can then open, read and print the pdf file on your Mac. You can even edit them.
I have tested both of these conversion sites and they both work pretty well. They are both free.
Site one is easier, to use, just read the instructions below, but I’ve included two sites just in case one of them goes down or doesn’t work for you.
I was asked the question today. How do I open some Microsoft Publisher files with the .pub extension on my shiny new Mac. The answer is that you cannot really do this unless you have a virtual windows machine running in your Mac.
This is something that a lot of people do after they convert over from Windows to Mac, because they feel lost without the BSD (Blue Screens of Death) and the constant security messages.
“Would you like to open the web page that you just asked to open”. “Would you like the web page that you just acknowledged that you want to open to open.” “Do you realise that content on the web is insecure and may harm your junk Windows machine?” “Would you like to remember these settings?” Well guess what, you can’t because you don’t have the permissions as the only user on the computer to change these settings!”
Anyway, most Mac users soon get used to the fact that you can do everything a Windows machine does, just a lot easier. So they soon blow away the virtual machine.
Unfortunately .pub files cannot be run natively on any Mac software. But there is a solution.
